From the President 2008-2009

Welcome to the NCMA Denver Chapter’s 2008-2009 year.  I’m delighted to take ‘the helm” as Chapter from Steve Peck.  Steve did a wonderful job, last year and deserves our thanks.  This year, as President Emeritus, Steve will provide me with guidance from his experiences as the last year’s Denver Chapter President.  Please take a look at our list of Board members from our website.  You are encouraged to contact us and the hot links on that web-site can ease the process.

We have already held an advance Board meeting, to ensure an exciting line-up of Monthly Meeting Speakers, Networking and Educational opportunities.  Our kickoff meeting will be held jointly with the Society of American Military Engineers (http://www.same.org) AND the Construction Management Association of America (http://cmaanet.org).  Later, we plan to meet jointly with the Society of Cost Estimating and Analysis (http://www.sceaonline.net).  While mostly budget items were being discussed, each Board member had plenty of great ideas for the upcoming year.  (Our chapter is lucky to have a very enthusiastic Board.)  Most occupy new positions and all are really looking forward to making a positive impact in our Chapter.

“So what?”…you may ask.  This means it can be even more advantageous for each chapter member to attend the monthly meetings, audio seminars and symposiums.  It means more opportunities to network and discover what is important in both our chosen profession and amongst our peers.  Our particular chapter membership base covers a broad spectrum of business types and disciplines.  Our monthly meetings are attended by all levels of Contract/Subcontract Administrators & Managers, Lawyers and a host of closely related professionals.  Your attendance will provide you with the opportunity to capitalize on learning, building relationships and, establishing new connections.  Like the education you pursued in order to get to your position, your NCMA membership and participation can both keep you “in the game” and help promote you to higher levels.  My best wishes to you all and I hope to see and talk with you at all of our gathering opportunities.

Each month, I’ll try to offer a “final thought” to bring you a smile and perhaps another perspective.

Paul R. Fisher

NCMA Denver Chapter President 2008-2009

One final thought… Remember:  There is nothing you can do about airplane delays.  Don’t get upset – use the extra time productively.

Additionally, the Chapter will reimburse each member up to a lifetime total of $500 for the cost towards study materials and exam fees, upon successful completion of a certification.  What do you have to lose in getting started towards this life and career changing process?

If there is any interest in participating in a certification study group, please forward your interest to dcouture@ball.com.  List what module you are studying for, what is a good time for you to meet with others, your general location, do you have the study materials, etc.

NCMA LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Are YOU a potential candidate for the NCMA Contract Management Leadership Development Program (CMLDP) for the class starting in June 2009?

Start now to think about and plan your application, which will be due in early 2009. Recognizing the value and importance of this training program for our membership and for the Denver Chapter, the Board of Directors recently created a new chair position to recruit and assist interested members in learning about the program and submitting their applications.

Here are some key points to ponder in deciding whether or not to apply:

·        The primary goal is to help develop the next generation of quality contract management professionals as leaders and managers to fill the current and future gaps in industry, government, and the NCMA itself.

·        The ideal candidates:

o   Are in the early stages of their careers and not yet managers

o   Have an undergraduate or MBA degree

o   Have some experience in the contract management field

·        Participants receive top-quality training in fundamental leadership, contract management, and “soft” skills from June 2009 – April 2010 that includes a combination of:

Classroom and self-paced, Web-based coursework

o   Developmental assignments with NCMA, usually with your own chapter or the national organization

o   Attendance at four NCMA leadership and training conferences

o   Mentoring assignments with NCMA Fellows

·        In return, candidates are asked to commit two additional years to membership in NCMA

·        The market value of the training is estimated at more than $15,000.

o   NCMA covers the cost of materials, instruction, seminars, conferences and mentoring.

o   Travel costs are paid for by the candidate or his or her employer and/or local NCMA chapter
