MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Recently, I was told that my name did not appear on the rolls of NCMA National as being a member.  That turned out to be a "system error" but made me think about what NCMA does for me as a member.  How can you quantify what NCMA does for its members?  With our NCMA annual membership, we 1) receive the Contract Management magazine, 2) make connections with other professionals who have similar interests, 3) attend local meetings and programs, the national events, audio seminars and 4) utilize the chapter as the proving ground to develop and fine-tune leadership skills.

The last two jobs for which I was hired were through contacts I had made at NCMA.  Certainly that was worth the annual renewal fee.  But also realize that the Denver Chapter has decided to offer to PAY FOR YOUR membership through our scholarship program.  All you have to do is provide proof that your Company will not pay, like a rejection notice from your Company.

Also know that we have many other scholarship opportunities available.

WE ARE GIVING AWAY MONEY!  See our scholarship section of the website to learn more about it.  We offer to help pay for college classes, pay for NCMA events and even pay for trips to NCMA National events.  So please take a look at what we have to offer.

We have some very good monthly meetings coming up too.  October's speaker is dealing with Security contracts in today's tough environments.  Please be sure to check it out and make time in your busy schedule to attend.  See you all there!

Steve Peck

Denver Chapter President

Monthly Meeting October

Interested in hearing what it is like to contract for security services in today's world?  Robert L. Bobo (General Manager, Colorado & Wyoming) and Kara S. Plender, M.A. (Manager of Business Development), both from Wackenhut, will discuss the intricacies and issues that have evolved for contracting with a world class security firm.  Come listen to the security issues that people face daily in office buildings, malls and other public places, as well as the upcoming planning of the Democratic Convention.  Are you aware and prepared?  Are you doing what you can to help guard your community and the areas you work and live in?

This interesting lunch meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at Landry's Seafood House, 7209 South Clinton Street.  Reservation will begin at 11:30; lunch at 11:45 and speaker at 12:15, adjourning no later than 1:00 p.m.  Your meal choices are Salmon Fillet with side salad and vegetables or Chicken Fettuccini with side salad and your choice of coffee, tea or water.  The cost for this lunch is $18 and your RSVP should be received no later than COB on October 5, 2007, by responding to this email (include your name, company and meal choice) or by calling Stacey Gustus at 303-634-4428.

NEWS ON EDUCATION

DOD Sets New Contracting Career Field Certification Standards

In a memorandum dated August 24, 2007, the Department of Defense director of defense procurement and acquisition policy, Shay D. Assad, implemented changes in the Contracting Career Field Certification Standards and Development Guides. While formal education and experience requirements remained the same, the changes place increased emphasis on training in systems acquisition. Individuals who apply for a DOD certification in the contracting career field on or after October 1, 2007, must meet these new core certification standards.

Granting of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Credit

NCMA is fairly liberal in granting CPE credit toward certification or recertification requirements. When attendance records are maintained and when the program is presented by a qualified instructor or discussion leader, the following types of programs are acceptable for CPE credit:

  1. Internal training programs (courses, seminars, and workshops);
  2. The portion of a contract management organization staff meeting in which a structured educational program is used to provide staff with knowledge regarding topics and subjects such as those included below. Informal discussions of current events in the contract management profession do not qualify for CPE hours;
  3. University and college courses (credit and noncredit);
  4. Education and development programs presented at conferences, conventions, meetings, seminars, and workshops of professional organizations. For example, the NCMA World Congress, Government Contract Management Conference, Aerospace and Defense Conference, and education programs presented at monthly chapter meetings; and
  5. Training programs presented by other contract management organizations, educational organizations, foundations, and associations. For example, education and training programs sponsored by NCMA, NCMA's individual chapters, Institute for Supply Management (ISM), National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP), etc.

Certification Study Groups

If there is any interest in participating in a certification study group, please forward your interest to dcouture@ball.com.  List what you are studying for, what is a good time, your general location, do you have the materials, etc.  I am in the process of purchasing all of the study materials for each area and will let the membership know when this is completed.
