From the President 2008-2009
I mentioned last month how very pleased I am with the
spirit of our Board and the attention they have already given to improving our
Chapter. They continue to impress
me. If you wish to attend a Board
meeting to see for yourself, please contact me or Stacey. I look with enthusiasm to get to meet many
more of the Chapter members at our Monthly meetings and Seminars.
Passivity can produce a self fulfilling prophecy. Please know that your feedback is very
important and will be used to help steer the direction of our Chapter. I encourage each of our members to attend at
least one of the Monthly meetings, this year.
Even with drive time, the few hours away (which may need to be made up
at work) will provide you an opportunity to stay engaged in the Contracting
community. Additionally, in this time,
we need to remain networked. Try this:
Sit next to someone you don't know, at the meetings.
Now to some other items:
As it would be irresponsible to merely hear about your
contract terms and then execute the agreement, I urge the Denver Chapter to
spend the necessary time to read the Ballot issues and learn about the
candidates, as you would your contracts.
Reflect on their benefits and risks.
Then vote. It is your duty.
Please note: NCMA does not endorse or support
political candidates for public office.

Monthly Meetings
October Meeting
October 14th
marks the second monthly event for NCMA Denver Chapter's program year and we are excited to introduce Stu Nylund from Kiewit Engineering Co. to be our honored
guest. Stu will be talking to us
about how you, in contracting and procurement, can attract top quality
contractors to bid on projects. He will
focus on:
* the steps that you can take to ensure that
you consistently increase the pool of contractors from which to
choose;
* how you can be
sure to get the most competitive prices
when asking for a quote;
* how to create a
complete and realistic Statement of Work that will save you
money; and
* how to build
strong relationships to keep contractors interested in bidding on future projects.
Stu is a project manager who has been involved in this
industry for 30 years and with Kiewit since 1981. He brings a wealth of knowledge that we in
the field of contracting and procurement will benefit from immensely. For over 120 years Kiewit Engineering Co. has
been in the construction, engineering and mining services industry. Kiewit has established itself as a prominent
part of the Denver community since the late 1930s. They have been ranked as one of America's
most admired companies by FORTUNE magazine.
We are pleased to have Mr. Nylund share some of his knowledge and
expertise to help us be more successful in our own positions. To learn more about Kiewit Engineering Co.
please visit www.kiewit.com.
This luncheon (cheeseburger or grilled chicken breast
(Cajun or BBQ) at a cost of $18 will be held at Lone Star, 7450 West 52nd
Avenue, Arvada, CO, 80002 (303-420-7827) (north of the I70/Wadsworth

Certification
Study Groups
We currently have a study
group just getting started and it is being led by Charles Teuber, C.P.M. Additionally, your local Chapter has
purchased all of the necessary study materials for all of the relevant exams,
which should greatly reduce your cost investment in preparing for the exams.
The Chapter will reimburse
each member, up to a lifetime total of $500 for the cost towards study
materials and exam fees, upon successful completion of a certification. What do you have to lose in getting started
towards this life and career changing process?
Below is a listing of
resource materials at the disposal of the Denver Chapter Membership. Preference for checking out the material will
be given to those individuals studying for certification. If you are interested in checking out one of
the items below, please contact Blake Couture at dcouture@ball.com.

NCMA LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Are YOU a potential candidate for the
NCMA Contract Management Leadership Development Program (CMLDP) for the class
starting in June 2009?
Start now to think about and
plan your application, which will be due in early 2009. Recognizing the value
and importance of this training program for our membership and for the Denver
Chapter, the Board of Directors recently created a new chair position to
recruit and assist interested members in learning about the program and
submitting their applications.
Here are some key points to
ponder in deciding whether or not to apply:
·
The primary goal is to help develop the
next generation of quality contract management professionals as leaders and
managers to fill the current and future gaps in industry, government, and the
NCMA itself.
·
The ideal candidates:
o
Are in the early stages of their careers
and not yet managers
o
Have an undergraduate or MBA degree
o
Have some experience in the contract
management field
·
Participants receive top-quality
training in fundamental leadership, contract management, and “soft” skills from
June 2009 – April 2010 that includes a combination of:
Classroom
and self-paced, Web-based coursework
o
Developmental assignments with NCMA,
usually with your own chapter or the national organization
o
Attendance at four NCMA leadership and
training conferences
o
Mentoring assignments with NCMA Fellows
·
In return, candidates are asked to
commit two additional years to membership in NCMA
·
The market value of the training is
estimated at more than $15,000.
o
NCMA covers the cost of materials,
instruction, seminars, conferences and mentoring.
o
Travel costs are paid for by the
candidate or his or her employer and/or local NCMA chapter

details are available from the NCMA website, www.ncmahq.org.
